In 1909 a law banned the Postal Service from shipping “all spirituous, vinous, malted, fermented or other intoxicating liquors of any kind.”
The ban on selling alcohol was lifted in 1933 but the mail restriction remains in place to this day.
For the Postal Service, lifting this ban could result in an increase of revenue by an estimated $50 million or so a year.
The USPS is also the only available option for US Service Members stationed over seas. UPS, DHL and FedEx cannot ship to APO or FPO addresses.
Small businesses (local wineries and craft brewers) have no method of selling their merchandise to APOs or FPOs.
USPS should be providing this service and competing with the private sector.
