Remove wireless carriers from the software update process for mobile cellular devices.

Created by J.M. on October 01, 2013

Wireless carriers are delaying/blocking software updates to mobile cellular devices, resulting in outdated/unsecure devices. Such actions are done to drive up sales of newer devices and block unwanted features which would hurt sales. This petition is to remove all wireless carriers from the software update process.

Software updates start at the OS manufacturer, then go to the device OEM for testing and customization, and then go to the carriers for further testing, customization, and release. Carriers often delay or block updates.

This effects Android, Blackberry, and Windows Phone devices. Apple bypasses this process as they have a special deal made with carriers so they release updates directly to devices. This creates an unfair competitive advantage in the market and hurts consumers.
