Currently, the U.S. recognizes marriages for the purposes of taxation as well as rights of family members. However, marriage is a union before God, which the government has no business recognizing. Instead, recognize civil unions, and allow gays and lesbians to get a union. Take out the word Marriage so the religious right no longer have an excuse to attempt to ban gay marriage, and keep the seperation of church and state. America is NOT a theocracy!
