The word "marriage" has religious ties for many people and seems to be one of the main points of conflict that hinders social equality on this issue.
We advocate that the word "marriage" be removed from laws and legal terminology within the United States and be replaced with "civil unions", no matter your gender or sexuality.
The legal binding contract you file at the court house is your "civil union" and if you wish to perform a marriage ceremony, that's your personal choice, whether it be in a Church, or some other location.
This removes the religious conflict that opposes equal footing and issues with "straight marriage" and "gay civil unions" that create "separate but equal" classes in America.
Protect the religious meaning of the word, while giving equality.
