Christopher Columbus didn't "discover" this country. In fact, he never set foot on the land that is now the United States of America.
What Columbus' journeys helped set in motion became one of the most destructive events in human history. His actions, and the actions of Europeans who followed, led to centuries of suffering for indigenous people widely considered by Columbus and his contemporaries as subhuman. These facts are well documented.
Rather than celebrating an individual linked to such universally agreed upon atrocities, we should acknowledge the indigenous people in our country that survive despite centuries of enduring poverty, social and political isolation as well as defamation of character through insulting sports mascots and stereotypical images in film and television.
