Dear Government Officials,
Every year on the second Monday of October, the citizens of the United States celebrates the federal holiday known as Columbus Day. This petition was created so that the federal holiday is appropriately renamed: Indigenous Peoples' Day. Christopher Columbus accidentally discovered America. As history books have shown us, Christopher Columbus enslaved, murdered, raped and decimated an entire population of indigenous people who inhabited this land and without caution welcomed Columbus.
Christopher Columbus should not continue to be honored through this federal holiday. Several cities have already renamed this holiday to Indigenous Peoples' Day, most recently Santa Fe, NM. We must not forget our history. Let us rightfully honor those Natives who were here first.
