Whereas, Congress is specifically and constitutionally charged “To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts,” and
Whereas Matt Damon's recent film “The Martian” has raised awareness of of astronomy, science, technology, engineering, and math; and
Whereas, Matt Damon's recent film “The Martian” has raised awareness of the power of the human spirit to survive, to thrive, to achieve, and to hope and dream in the face of overwhelming odds,
Therefore, we propose that the planet Mars for the duration of one martian year be renamed “Matt Damon,” to honor his artistic work, his raising awareness of STEM areas, and his celebration of the human spirit.
