The species "Brassica Oleracea", commonly known as "Romanesco broccoli", is a vegetable exhibiting a stunning degree of self similarity in form. The late mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot coined the term "fractal" (from "fractional dimension") for such forms.
Fractals are more than a mere mathematical curiosity; they have an uncanny ability to resemble the natural world. Indeed, Hollywood uses fractal algorithms for simulating mountainous terrains or branching of trees.
Other fractal forms are otherworldly (such as the eponymous Mandelbrot set), but so visually intricate that they inspired an entire generation to explore computer algorithms and the mathematics behind them.
So, in honor of Dr. Mandelbrot, and the intellectual revolution he launched, let us officially rename Fractoccoli.
