The United States Military Academy at West Point houses cadets in eight barracks named after American generals ranging from Grant to Eisenhower. One of these barracks built in 1962 is named after Robert E. Lee, Commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia.
Lee graduated from West Point in 1829, and served as an officer in the US Army honorably for over 30 years, including as superintendent of West Point.
However, Lee's decision to resign his commission as an officer in the US Army and take up arms in rebellion against the Union constituted an act of treason. It is inappropriate to honor an officer who fought to uphold the institution of slavery and raised his hand against the nation he swore to defend.
The barracks should be renamed.
