Thanks to the World Trade Center Health Program, the lives of 21,600 men and women, many of whom are police, firefighters and emergency medical personnel, have been granted a temporary extension over the last year. The program has helped cover the expensive medical costs of treating life-threatening diseases, including several different types of lung and blood cancer, caused by exposure to toxic dust in and around Ground Zero.
Funding for the program is set to expire in September 2016, and if Congress does not take action and vote to renew the WTC Health Program, tens of thousands of first responders may lose their lives within the next 24-36 months.
