repatriate the remains of Chief Osceola so they may be interred in Florida as he requested prior to his death in 1838.

Created by C.F. on January 22, 2013

Osceola, the great Seminole Chief remains a central figure of Florida history. He is currently buried at Fort Moultrie in South Carolina. On October 21, 1837, on the orders of U.S. General Thomas Sidney Jesup, Osceola was captured when he went for making peace in Fort Peyton. Osceola's capture by deceit caused a national outrage. General Jesup and the administration were condemned by many congressional leaders. That December, Osceola and other Seminole prisoners were moved to Fort Moultrie, Charleston, South Carolina. Chief Osceola died just three months later from malaria on January 30,1838. Sensing the end, Chief Osceola requested that his remains be returned to his Florida home. Now nearly 200 years later, the United States government should finally honor and fulfill that request.
