The 1986 Hughes Amendment violates the 2nd Amendment of the constitution, there also is great controversy over it legitimacy as law with video supporting that claim. It bans the civilian ownership and transfer of fully automatic firearms registered after May 19th 1986.
There is no reason to ban a machine gun made after 5/19/1986 because there isn't that big of a difference between an M-16 and an M-4. The people going through the legal processes to get one are not going to be committing crimes with it and the FBI and ATF know about them. And it would pump in more firearms that require a $200 tax stamp.
The Hughes Amendment also directly hurts firearms manufacturers that manufacture machine guns such as Colt financially, a repeal would boost their bottom line and create jobs as a byproduct.
