The 2nd Amendment was written during a time when it might have been necessary to organize state militias during wartime or civil unrest. In today's world this is no longer necessary because we have the largest, most powerful national military the world has ever known.
It's time to repeal this obsolete amendment. Doing so would NOT infringe upon private gun ownership. Guns are, and have always been, simply one of many goods and products that are legal to own in the United States. A repeal of the 2nd Amendment would not change that.
