Since the beginnings of the International Criminal Court (ICC) the United States has tried tirelessly to obstruct the justice the ICC seeks; stating we don’t need this organization because of our ability to self-prosecute. It is clear from 1.5 year sentence served by Lynndie England who brutally tortured hundreds of Iraqis that we cannot self-prosecute our American villains. We passed the AMSPA in the hopes to scare the ICC into submission by threatening to invade the Netherlands in response to prosecution. This threat has worked, but at the cost of one of Americas most cherished values, Justice. We must repeal this bill and work towards a more internationally egalitarian community, where the ICC can punish those responsible for war crimes like torture to ensure that they are never used.
