Christopher Columbus is often celebrated for having "discovered America". Though it is true his venture helped spark interest in increasing the population of North America, his treatment of the population already living on the land was deplorable and despicable. His actions and crimes against humanity should not be celebrated. His interactions can be linked to the initiation of the transatlantic slave trade, yet this man shares recognition with Abraham Lincoln and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
This holiday would be similar to Poland celebrating their "discovery" by Adolf Hitler. History has painted Columbus in a bright light, but it is not necessarily deserved.
