Repeal the Death Penalty: a scourge on spending as well as an unfair treatment.

The death penalty is far costlier to our country than a system that utilizes life without parole in its stead. The average cost of death penalty cases is 2.4 million dollars, and often times these cases, after appeals, end with life without parole. In comparison, the average cost for a life sentence without parole is 500,000 dollars, including the incarceration cost.
Moreover, a 2009 poll by DPIC found that police chiefs ranked the death penalty as the least efficient use of taxpayer’s money, and last among ways to reduce violent crime. The top academic criminological societies, 88% rejected the notion that the death penalty is an effective deterrent to murder.
There is also evidence that the death penalty is applied unfairly; a greater proportion of those convicted are African American.
