Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act has been found unconstitutional in eight federal courts, yet the act is still in effect today. DOMA prohibits the recognition of same-sex marriages on the federal level. As such, same-sex couples who wish to marry must instead register for a civil union or domestic partnership, both of which deny numerous federal rights that marriages provide.
There are 1,049 benefits and protections available to heterosexual married couples. Civil unions only allow for a fraction of these rights.
DOMA limits the constitutional rights of a minority. Please work to repeal it for the sake of equality. Repeal it for the sake of liberty and justice for all. Repeal it for the sake of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Thank you.
