The Defense of Marriage Act defined marriage as a legal union between one man and one woman. This does not allow gay marriage to be legally recognized. This petition calls for a redefinition of marriage as legal union between two consenting adults. This does not allow for legally recognized marriage between an adult and a child, or a person of any age and an animal or inanimate object. It merely grants basic human liberties to an oppressed minority. It allows gay couples, who would be together anyway, to be granted the same rights and privileges as heterosexual married couples. It does not infringe on anyone's rights and will not cause adverse effects. Homosexuality is a religious issue, not a legal one, and should be treated as such, not infringing on the basic human rights of supporters.
