On March 15, 2011, the Syrian people took to the streets to protest against the corrupt regime led by President Bashar Al-Assad. Many protesters were arrested, beaten, or killed by government militias. Various opposition groups formed to protect the rights of the Syrian people. One of these groups, known as Al Nusra Front, has been designated by the Obama administration as a terrorist organization in December of 2012, claiming affiliations with Al Qaeda. This is a highly unconfirmed report, and is yet again another rash decision conducted by the Obama administration. Al Nusra Front is a key contributor to Syria's opposition, and is supported by the democratic Syrian National Coalition. Its involvement in the opposition would ensure the United States' disinvolvement in the Syrian conflict.
