The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) is a United States copyright law that implements two 1996 treaties of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). A portion of the DMCA criminalizes the act of circumventing an access control, whether or not there is actual infringement of copyright itself. This must be revised.
As noted by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the DMCA and similar anti-circumvention legislation:
- stifles free expression,
- jeopardizes fair use,
- impedes competition, and
- interferes with computer intrusion laws.
Prevent similar restrictive legislation such as the language within the Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act (CBDTPA).
