The DMCA was an attempt to control the illegal spread of software, music and videos.
However, this act limits far too much freedom.
It makes allowances for reasonable backups of the media that you just purchased. However it expressly forbids breaking the encryption on the disk. It is usually impossible to backup your disk without breaking the encryption.
It provides a no-win situation for legal purchasers of media.
We acknowledge that there should be some system in place to ensure that media companies get money for their work.
The current system gives far too much power to the media companies. There must be a reasonable compromise somewhere, but this is not it.
