The purpose of this petition is to ask the Obama administration to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
DOMA is unconstitutional (according to eight federal courts) and violates the Full Faith and Credit Clause. Under DOMA, if a same-sex couple that is married in a state that recognizes such marriages moves to a state that does not, that state does not have to legally recognize the union. This means these couples wil not recieve the same benefits in this new state and that they are being discriminated against.
Our country was founded on the priniple that all people are created equal under the law. Under the Full Faith and Credit clause, every state would have to recogize those marriages. Otherwise, DOMA is violating the civil rights of a portion of the population.
