The FDA has had in place a policy since 1983 which discriminates against men who, at any time since 1977, have had sex with another man. This policy has resulted in tens of thousands of healthy donors being turned away due to the perceived risk of infection of patients with HIV. This petition would have the FDA reform the donor eligibility questions to allow for 'men who have had sex with other men' to no longer be a disqualifying factor and to instead replace it with questions relative to the donor's sexual history. Disqualification should be based on promiscuity and unsafe sexual practices, not the sexual orientation of the donor. This policy represents the remnants of the fear-mongering that prevailed in the 1980s and 90s against homosexuality due to the spread of HIV/AIDS.
