In 2012 nearly 4 million babies were born to teenagers aged 15-19 years old. While young people in the U.S. ages 15 to 24 make up only 25% of the sexually active population, they acquire about 50% of the 19,700,000 new sexually transmitted infections (STIs) every year.
Unfortunately, many of these teenagers are not taught comprehensive sexual health education to know about effective means of contraception that could prevent STIs and unplanned pregnancies. Instead, some states prefer to teach abstinence-only sex education. The problem with abstinence-only programs is that they do not accurately discuss contraceptives in fear that they will be advocating sex.
