Law abiding citizens have the right to own firearms under the 2nd amendment. This includes owning machine guns. However, the Hughes Amendment to the Firearm Owners' Protection Act has effectively made it nearly impossible for the average citizen to legally own a machine gun, as it bans civilian ownership of them if they were not registered prior to May 19, 1986. When something is banned after a certain date, it eventually becomes so cost prohibitive to own that only the very wealthy can acquire them. This is why the Hughes Amendment must be repealed.
