The Johnson Amendment was passed in 1954 introduced by then Senator Lyndon B. Johnson. It prohibits religious institutions from endorsing and opposing political candidates. In essence it violates the Constitutional First Amendment protecting free speech and freedom of religion. Violators are subject to the loss of their tax exempt status.
