Mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines have drastically increased the prison population within the United Sates. Mandatory minimum sentencing for drug crimes means that murderers, rapists, and terrorists receive lesser sentencing than that for what is socially seen as minor drug offenses. Given that mandatory minimums appeared to have no impact on overall crime rates, they seem to have accomplished nothing but to put a huge percentage of our population behind bars. Mandatory minimum sentencing should be repealed, and prisoners sentenced under those guidelines should be allowed to request new sentences.
