We need a divorce.
The word marriage should be relegated to religious institutions. Couples who wish to marry may do so by consulting with their religious advisors.
The word marriage should not exist within U.S. law as it does today. It should instead be replaced by civil unions which afford two people the same rights that we now afford to married couples. Any two people of legal age should be able to enter into a civil union without any regard to their race, creed, or sexual orientation. A man and a woman may enter a civil union. Two homosexual men may enter a civil union. Two women may enter a civil union even if they are not a couple, but wish to make medical and financial decisions on each other's behalf. A civil union is a series of contracts with no religious implications.
