NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement, has done nothing to improve the American economy. Although citizens can now purchase cheaply made goods from abroad, many U.S. citizens have been put out of work as their companies fled the U.S. in hopes of lowering costs and increasing profits. These citizens stopped paying into the tax base and began drawing unemployment benefits and services that are ultimately unsustainable. We should move towards the model set by Germany to keep manufacturing and agriculture jobs in the U.S. In this way, more Americans will be working, thus increasing tax revenue so that America can begin to pay off its debt and work towards building a sustainable future.
