Since 1984, this act has prevented states from choosing their own drinking age, due to the risk of losing some of their national highway funding. This has caused some serious problems.
The rate of alcohol abuse in the United States has risen to unprecedented rates since the law was enacted. It is estimated that 1 in 5 teenage girls binge drink. Every year 23,000 women die due to alcohol poisoning and about 88,000 people die in total from alcohol-related accidents. A large majority of these deaths are a result of the lack of knowledge that young Americans have for alcohol because of the way it has been portrayed to them by the government and the media.
Other countries with a drinking age of 21 include Indonesia, Pakistan, and Oman.
