Repeal the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act

In 2006, Congress passed the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act (PAEA), which requires the Postal Service to pre-fund 75 years of retiree benefits - something no other business or government agency has to do. This means that the postal service must make a $5.5 billion payment every year to provide benefits for employees who may not even be born yet. Despite the current recession, and the rise of the internet and email as alternatives to sending mail, the USPS has maintained net annual profits of over $600 million. Had the prepayments required under PAEA never been enacted into law, the USPS would not have a net deficiency of nearly $20 billion, but instead be in the black by at least $1.5 billion. Stop congress from destroying America's postal service.
