The last recession has decimated the ranks of independent truckers and small trucking businesses and government regulation is interfering with job growth. Governments interest in regulation should be promoting jobs, fair trade and public safety in commerce.
A prime example is International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) which, in part, requires drivers to keep a log book in the cab of the truck and record the number of miles they drive in each state and the receipts for any fuel they purchase. Most use paper and pen because the GPS equipment was too expensive. To divide up the fuel tax revenue, the states could have used the number of paved miles, traffic patterns, etc. Instead they put the burden of tracking each mile on the truckers.
