Reporters Without Borders' World Press Freedom Index was released this past April. The United States ranks 41st this year, opposed to 49th the year prior. While this is an improvement, RFS wrote an article on why the United States ranks considerably lower than most developed nations; namely because of our labelling of whistleblowers as criminals who have betrayed the nation. This, combined with the big-brother attitude instituted by continuous surveillance on civilians by the NSA, and arrests of journalists covering domestic conflicts, has led RSF to the conclusion that the USA doesn't have as much press freedom as people may think. I propose rewriting or repealing the Espionage Act in order to reinstate and improve a First Amendment right that all ought to receive: the freedom of press.
