We petition that the government remove former President Andrew Jackson from the US $20 bill, to be replaced with Civil Rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King.
Former President Jackson was far from an ideal icon that the United States needs to be reminded of on a daily basis. His Indian Removal Act of 1830 drove over 16,000 members of Cherokee and other Native American nations, among others, off of their lands in the deep south, marching over a trail that covers more than 2,200 miles of land and water routes in nine states. Thousands forced to moved died.
Although there were other failings during his time in office, this alone should be a shining reason why he should not be glorified.
MLK was not a perfect man, but he used nonviolence to garner civil liberties peacefully for millions.
