Currently, the 2nd Monday of each October is a Federal holiday named after Christopher Columbus, the "discoverer" of America. This holiday has become divisive, with many businesses and schools refusing to recognize it because of the rape, murder and displacement of Native Americans perpetrated by Columbus and his crew.
While I do not believe in censoring history simply because it's hard to stomach, I don't believe Columbus deserves a holiday, nor do many Americans. That said, it's unfair to simply cut a holiday from the schedule.
This petition asks that Columbus Day, the 2nd Monday in October, be removed from the Federal Holiday list, and be replaced with the first Monday of Major League Baseball's season (typically the first or second Monday of April).
