The current way that we elect senators and congressmen is called First Past the Post. Under this system whoever gets the most votes in a district wins the election. It's simple, but shockingly broken. Because of it, our government has been run by the same two parties for over a century. Not everyone agrees with the Democrats or Republicans but must vote for them anyone because any other party has no chance of their candidate winning. Under alternative vote, you can rank your vote so that you can vote for whoever you most want elected, while giving a second vote to a big party in the hopes of preventing your least favorite from winning.
