The first past the post voting system started out as a healthy part of democracy, but has since devolved into a two party system with citizens not liking either side. Forcing us to vote for the lesser of two evils through what is known as the spoiler effect. The solution is the AV vote. It allows voters to rank candidates in order. Even if your first choice candidate fails your vote is then reapplied to your second choice and so on. This allows the voter to vote the way they want, and aren't forced into "strategic voting" to make sure the lesser of two evils is not elected. This process is sometimes called instant runoff voting, and simulates having revotes with the least liked candidate being removed over and over till you have a winner.
