John Quincy Adams, Rutherford B. Hayes, Benjamin Harrison, George W. Bush, and Donald Trump have all lost the popular vote, but won presidency due to the electoral college. A preferential voting system asks voters to rank candidates while voting. After votes are counted, votes for candidates in last place get moved to the next choice picked by voters. This system would prevent votes from third parties from getting "thrown away", would better reflect Americans' opinions, and would give third parties a better chance at winning presidency, by ending discouragement over fear of votes being "thrown away".
