Replace the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) metric with Gross Domestic Soil Fertility

Created by H.G. on February 07, 2013

Healthy soil is the basis of our sustenance and our quality of life.

We have been contaminating, compacting, covering, depleting and eroding soil instead of protecting and building healthy soil.

Soils formed over thousands of years, but can be irreparably damaged in less than a year, if not thoughtfully maintained.

We should judge ourselves on the basis of how well we protect, nurture and build healthy soil ecosystems to support all live. This is a better metric than economic consumption or production and will guide us toward a more pleasant, sustainable future.

Our own food system and the wider natural ecosystems that we depend on and enjoy need our keen and thoughtful attention, beginning with maintaining fertile soil.
