Elimination of the one dollar bill will, over time, save taxpayers billions of dollars. In the current economic situation, any money that the government can save is important. Paper money, specifically the one dollar bill, has a lifespan of approximately 4.8 years. the replacement cost of a dollar bill is 5 cents. The cost of a dollar coin is approximately 18 cents, possibly less depending on the design and materials used in the coin. The lifespan is at minimum 30 years. This represents a savings to the government, and, ultimately, the taxpayer of 17 cents per dollar produced. While this may not seem like much, multiply that over the billions of dollars that will need to be produced over the next 30 years, and you will see real savings.
