The CAFE system was created in 1975, and since then it has become a woefully outdated political tool. Rather than addressing the core issue of vehicle emissions. In fact, CAFE encourages buyers to move toward less efficient trucks over cars based on questionable math and marginal real world fuel economy improvement. Instead, the Obama administration should take this opportunity to introduce new standards based on the types of chemicals that leave the exhaust pipe of a vehicle. Cleaner burning manufacturers should be encouraged. I propose a system that measures the content, quality, and total mass of exhaust fumes to determine fines and penalties instead of outdated mileage measurements.
