Modern school curriculum's prepare students for a generic and standard future, rather than imparting knowledge the student will actually use in their future career of choice. If a student struggles with math, obviously they will not want a career that involves math, so, rather than force them to take classes for math or put them in special education classes for math, allow them to pick classes that they think they will use in their career and life, and have teachers support students and help them along whatever path they want to take in their future, rather than forcing them along a pre-determined path.
