Unlike the "Star-Spangled Banner," a somber song that reflects the negative attitude of Americans at the time that the anthem was instituted during the Great Depression, "Columbia, The Gem of the Ocean" reflects a considerably more positive outlook in both its music and its lyrics. Additionally, "Columbia, The Gem of the Ocean" has just as much, if not more, historical value to the United States compared to the "Star-Spangled Banner;" it was used a de facto national anthem for the United States during the 19th century. Thus, by replacing our current national anthem with a truly patriotic song, we may reinvigorate our nation's pride and develop a positive national identity.
