Mangrove forests used to protect the coasts from major flooding during storm seasons, and provide vital biological services for the environment.
Though recently, coastal development and human activities have severely degraded the mangrove forests of the United States. This petition is to put together a plan to replant the degraded areas.
Why should the government do this?
First off, mangrove forests act as a natural buffer against storm surges and flooding that other occur during tropical weather. This buffer protect cities and coastal developments from costly flood damages (according to NOAA, since 2010 over $14 trillion has been spent on these damages).
Replanting trees would eventually lessen the costs of flooding and improve the water quality by removing pollutants.
