Many traffic lights are inefficiently timed, leading to unnecessary gasoline consumption, increased emissions, and increased wear on vehicles.

By efficiently timing our traffic lights, and networking traffic lights with traffic monitoring systems, it is possible to reduce wasteful idling. Accelerating from a dead stop to operating speed vastly reduces fuel economy.

If each of our 254 million cars saved a half of one ounce of gas per day from improved traffic control systems, it would save nearly one million gallons (992,188 gal.) of gas per day, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 19 million pounds per day.

It would also reduce the frustration that millions of motorists encounter while waiting at a red light for 2-3 minutes when there is no other traffic around.
