Al Gore may gross about $70 million from the sale of his Current TV network to Al-Jazeera, the cable channel funded in part by oil-rich Qatar, which was announced on Jan. 2, 2013.
Ryan Mac, a Forbes analyst, said that Forbes conservatively estimates Al Gore's net worth to be at least $300 million, making him wealthier than Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
President Obama called for new taxes on "the wealthiest Americans and the biggest corporations," a major part of a debt reduction plan. "If we don't act, the growing debt will eventually crowd out everything else," Obama said, "preventing us from investing in things like education or sustaining programs like Medicare."
