On January 1st, 1985 at approximately 8:38 p.m., Eastern Airlines Boeing 727 Flight 980 crashed into the Andes Mountains outside La Paz, Bolivia. All twenty-nine souls on board were killed. In the years since this tragedy, there have been numerous theories as to what happened and multiple attempts at searching the crash site but until now the black box had not been found. On a recent expedition to the site, Isaac Stoner and Dan Futrell found the crash recorder and brought it back to the US. Due to ICAO Annex 13, for the NTSB to analyse the recorder they need permission from the Bolivian government to proceed. Knowing more of what happened in the final minutes of this flight would give closure to the families of those who perished in this terrible accident.
