In the interest of fairness, change and increasing government reform, the president should openly request that the Commission on Presidential Debates invite viable third party candidates to the national debates.
In 2012 there are two candidates with the potential for 270 electoral votes. Including them in the debates leads to a more informed electorate.
The CPD was created by the Rep. and Dem. National Committees and is co-chaired by former heads of each committee. It invites only the two major party candidates to debate, with third party candidates invited only if they poll at 15 percent in five national polls and are on the ballot in enough states to reach 270 electoral votes. Most third party candidates are not even included on the polls, meaning they are shut out of the debates.
