Request that Congress and the State Legislature of Illinois repeal the Corwin Amendment.

Created by C.K. on February 12, 2015

There are several Constitutional Amendments that have been adopted by Congress and are still technically pending for ratification by the states. The most insidious of these proposals is known as the Corwin Amendment, passed in 1861 in a desperate attempt to appease the South and prevent the Civil War. It would have prevented Congress from banning the racist and inhumane institution of slavery four years later with the 13th Amendment. On the 206th birthday of President Lincoln, his and President Obama's home state of Illinois is the only state yet to repeal their ratification of the Amendment. Neither has Congress despite the disturbing implications it would have on the Constitution. We ask the President to destroy this symbol of injustice by calling for it’s repeal.
