Legislation on the federal level such as proposed Assault Weapon Bans are attempting to provide a nationally applicable solution to the problem of gun violence. It is clear from well collected data and statistics (FBI Uniform Crime Reports) that gun crime, and even violent crime in general, is not a nationwide epidemic. In fact, many counties in the US are completely free from such problems. We have concrete data showing us exactly where crime is occurring, even on the scale of individual neighborhoods, and so we request that President Obama address the nation and move this discussion to a local level so that the people's voices can be more readily heard and real solutions to geographically specific crime problems can be addressed by people who are on the ground and know what's happening.
